Netanyahu Rejects Rabin Assassination Conspiracy Theory Floated at His Support Rally

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected on Wednesday comments made by at a rally by an academic from Bar-Ilan University, who suggested Yigal Amir was not the man who assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, despite Amir's confession.

During a speech at a pro-Netanyahu rally in Petah Tikva Tuesday night, Middle East scholar Dr. Mordechai Kedar said that the person who murdered Rabin has the initials of Y.R. "The person… is probably a leading politician, who wanted to kill Yitzhak Rabin because he wanted to leave the Oslo Accords," he added.

In a statement Wednesday, Netanyahu called the assertion "nonsense."

Approximately 1,000 people attended the rally, billed as a show of support for Netanyahu and a protest against Israel's "gatekeepers" – namely the prosecution in Netanyahu's corruption cases.

Bar-Ilan University also distanced itself from Kedar's comments, stressing they do not represent the university. "We believe there is no place for such statements in Israeli society," the university said.
