Israel Kills Islamic Jihad Commander in Gaza; Rockets Fired at Southern, Central Israel
In one of the most serious flare-ups between Israel and the Gaza Strip in months, Israel confirmed Tuesday that it had killed the commander of the Islamic Jihad group in the coastal enclave, sparking a fierce response from Gaza militants.

Baha Abu al-Ata was killed in a joint operation carried out by the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet security service, during which the commander in charge of the most recent slew of rocket attacks against Israel and his wife were killed in their home.
Shortly after Islamic Jihad and Hamas vowed to retaliate, a barrage of rockets was launched at southern and central Israel, activating sirens across half the country. The Israeli military said that 50 rockets have been launched at Israel since Tuesday morning, 20 of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.
