Israel Kills Islamic Jihad Commander in Gaza; Rockets Fired at Southern, Central Israel

In one of the most serious flare-ups between Israel and the Gaza Strip in months, Israel confirmed Tuesday that it had killed the commander of the Islamic Jihad group in the coastal enclave, sparking a fierce response from Gaza militants.

Baha Abu al-Ata was killed in a joint operation carried out by the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet security service, during which the commander in charge of the most recent slew of rocket attacks against Israel and his wife were killed in their home.
